Are you a golf nut? If you're I bet you watched the Masters Golf tournament, and saw one of the crowd favourites, Bubba Watson win his first major Championship, and wear that revered green jacket at Augusta National. You would have also seen the incredible shot he hit on in the playoff to beat South African Louis Oostehuizen. Bubba hit a pitching wedge out of the trees which seemed to hook almost 50 yards, and wound up 12 feet from the pin. An amazing shot considering the enormous pressure he was under. His emotional celebration was also a thing to behold. Bubba didn't or perhaps couldn't hold back the tears. Inside a sport where emotions will always be kept in check, it was refreshing to see bubba breaking the mold, and cry like he didn't care.
One of the most astonishing aspects of bubba is the fact that he hits the ball a prodigious distance, using a very unique swing. He averaged approximately 290 yards from the tee at Augusta National, which happens to be well short of his 313 yard average on the PGA tour. One of the reasons proposed, was that he might have been holding back just a little to place a bigger emphasis on accuracy. I am one of the doubters that don't exactly accept that. Augusta National are well known for doing everything in their power to make the golf course play as difficult and long as possible.
One of the tricks the club does to have the course play longer, would be to mow the fairways in the direction of the tees. Just how does that help you ask? If you have ever played golf on a lush green golf course, you would have noticed that when the fairway or green is mowed, it'll leave dark and light green stripes. When you're looking down a fairway and you see dark and light lines, it means that the dark stripes are the parts of the fairway that have been mowed towards you. As the mower cuts the grass, it also smooths over it in the direction it is driving. Whenever you look at a dark line on fairway, you are essentially looking into the grain, which gives it the dark appearance. The light lines on the fairway therefore show that that particular part of the grass was mowed away from you and it appears lighter since you are looking down the grain. Whenever a ball lands on a dark stripe, it is restricted since the blades of grass are lying down in the opposite direction in which the ball is travelling.
To ensure that is what the organisers do in the Masters Golf tournament, they cut all the fairways in the direction of the tees. It has to be pretty effective if someone like Bubba Watson Averages 20 yards less than he normally does during the year.
One of the biggest reasons Bubba can hit the ball such great distances, is the fact that he uses the newest golf equipment. Technology changes so much, that the drivers that manufacturers bring out every year appear to go straighter and fartherthan the previous model.
